My trip to normandy - Day 6, part 1 - A Sunny Walk

June 5th was a another sunny day, so my owner and I went for a walk.


We explored a rural road close to the house.


There were lots of fields full of some kind of grain.




The road let us to a nearby village, where there were lots of WWII army vehicles.


I met this bear, who go to ride on a truck as a mascot.


We admired all the vehicles before walking on.




We walked past a field with lots of army tents.


These were used to stop vehicles I think.


I'm not sure what this is...


The sea!
We were at Omaha Beach again.

There was a small souvenir shop close to the beach where we did some shopping. Then we went to the beach.


There were lots of jeeps on the beach.


Some where just riding around in circles.


And these were parked for a picnic.


Finally some empty beach!
All those jeeps are cool, but some peace and quiet to enjoy the lovely weather is even nicer I think.


We had been here before so we knew how to get back to the house from here without walking back along the same route we used to get here.


When we got back to the house we got out one of the things we bought at the shop: a big bottle of Meuh Cola.


After all the walking we could use a nice refreshing drink, and the Meuh Cola turned out to be really tasty!

My trip to Normandy - Day 5, part 3 - Last Church of the Day

The next church we visited on June 4th had a memorial statue again for victims of both WWI and WWII.


The church itself was a bit blocky in my opinion.








It did have some cool windows.


The graveyard was fairly new and still in use.




Across the street I spotted a weird old tower. I wonder what it was for.


We finally cycled back to the house. Along the way we saw this small castle. Isn't it cool?

My trip to Normandy - Day 5, part 2 - Another Church

Next we spotted this statue of a rooster.
It was part of a memorial for soldiers who died in WWI.


We cycled on until we found another church on this crossroad.






There were fox-heads in the arch above the door!


See.
And also a weird face.


At this church we also had a look around on the graveyard.


This graveyard was still in use with newer graves and beautiful statues like this one.


I noticed something I never saw before.


A lot of the graves had plaques like this.
It seems they don't place a wreath on graves here, but invest in these plaques to be a lasting tribute to the lost loved one. Some graves had so many plaques, you couldn't even see the headstone.






Not all graves were new and well kept though, there were some old forgotten ones as well.


And even this lonely grave, almost hidden in the bushes. I wonder why it's so far away from all the other graves, but just like with the lonely cross I'd seen at another church, it will remain a mystery.

My trip to Normandy - Day 5, part 1 - A Church

On June 4 we could borrow bicycles, so we decided to visit some of the villages nearby.




We found this beautiful church.




A really friendly elderly lady told us that this was the only church in the area that hadn't been damaged during WWII. But sadly enough there wasn't enough money to keep the church in good order. The interior needed restoration, there was danger that stones would fall, so nobody was allowed inside the church anymore.




There were cows grazing next to the church.




There was a graveyard as well, and we had a look around of course.
