Schiermonnikoog - Day 3 - Part 2

I had a great time at the beach.

Even though the weather was really nice it was almost deserted.

We reached the sea!

After a while on the beach we made our way to the restaurant in the dunes and had something to drink. My owner forgot to take a picture though.

Next we took a different route back to the village.

I love this route: forest on one side, dunes on the other.

When we reached the village we walked a little bit further so we could visit the lighthouse again.

Almost back at the hotel.

At the hotel it was time for another hot chocolate with Amaretto

Next we went to our room and relaxed.
I watched the beautiful sunset.

In the evening we had dinner in the restaurant of the hotel again.

Ice cream!

Schiermonnikoog - Day 3 - Part 1

On Sunday it looked like it would stay dry so we went for a long walk.

It was sunny, but there were also still clouds, which made for a beautiful sky.

After a walk in the woods we spotted the WWII bunker.

We decided to visit the bunker.

But first we made a detour.

We visited the small cemetery Vredenhof, which has Commonwealth war graves

There are soldiers buried here from both WWI & WWII, as well as some unknown persons who washed up on the shore of the island.

It's a small, peaceful graveyard.

After visiting the Vredenhof we went to the bunker.

On top of the bunker you have a great view.

There's also a metal map of the island on top of the bunker.

It had rained a lot so we didn't go inside the bunker.
It looked as if it might be very wet and dank inside.

Instead we continued our walk.

And after a while we reached the beach.

Coming next: lots of beach pictures

Schiermonnikoog - Day 2 - Part 2

After visiting the lighthouse we walked to the beach.
At this point it is a very large beach with lots of plants and mud. We decided to walk a bit further along the beach to reach a part where we could reach the sea without trotting through the mud.

There were clouds coming closer.

But mostly it was still nice and sunny.

The road along the beach was flooded, so we had to walk on higher ground.

Dune spam.

Finally we reached the sea.
This is part of the beach pavilion. They remove the pavilion in winter, but let the platform stand to weather the sea.

There was a stiff breeze and I was just enjoying the sea air when a big hailstorm broke out.
Time to retreat.

We made our way back to the hotel and after a while the hail stopped.

We had gotten cold so at the hotel we warmed up with a mug of hot chocolate and Amaretto.
Yum!

We spent the rest of afternoon relaxing and reading.
In the evening we had dinner and I got to sit near the fireplace.

Dessert!

It was a really fun day,

Coming next: a walk to the bunker.

Schiermonnikoog - Day 2 - Part 1

Saturday morning the sky looked clear.

There was a chance of rain, but we decided to go on a walk anyway.

The water tower in all its glory.

We decided to walk to the lighthouse.

I spotted this sig.
Black Dunes Path. Sounds mysterious.

So of course we had to make a detour and walk along Black Dunes Path. We finally reached a crossroads. One road was leading to other parts of the island, the other had a sign that it was a dead end. However tempting the dead end path looked, we decided to double back to get to the lighthouse.

I saw this cool sign that tells you that dogs can walk free.

Back on track!

It was a really beautiful walk.

The lighthouse!

And look: there's the sea.

I had to go explore a little further of course.

Coming up next: more Schiermonnikoog picture spam.

A Birthday Trip to Schiermonnikoog

Last Friday we left for a birthday trip!

We went to our favorite island: Schiermonnikoog.
We took a train, a bus, then a boat, and then another bus to get to the hotel where we were staying. It was a very rainy day.

At the end of the afternoon we reached the hotel.
We had a room with a view on the water tower again. How cool!

There was a bottle of wine waiting for us, and the attendant acted like it was normal, but we never got a bottle of wine without asking for it before. We finally discovered a message on the back of the card: it was a birthday present from friends who secretly arranged it with the hotel!

Thanks J&D!

We were a bit tired of all the traveling, so we rested for a bit.

Then we had a very yummy dinner.

It was too dark and rainy for a walk after dinner, so I had to wait until the next day to explore the island.
