The Hippos of Berlin

On our second day in Berlin we went to the zoo.
First we wanted to see the hippos.
Flusspferde?
My owner told me that Flusspferde meant hippos, but I wasn't convinced.

At the entrance of the Flusspferde habitat there was a hippo statue though, so it might be true after all.

A Pygmee Hippo.
Seems Flusspferde are indeed hippos.

The big basin looked pretty empty of hippos though.
Maybe Flusspferde are fish...

But then a hippo appeared!

Look: the walls of the hippo habitat are made from glass so you can see the hippos walk under the water.

How cool!

You could also see them when they surfaced of course.

But to see them walk and swim under water was totally amazing.

A baby hippo.

The hippos really seemed to enjoy themselves and loved showing off to their audience.

What a great sight.
I'm glad we came to the zoo.

Next time: more animals.

I bet they've never seen a pig on the other side of the glass so they had to come over and look at you. ;)

@Demented Wench: oh, I like that idea.
@Jerry, Ben and Buttons: yup, they had bears as well. I might tell about the bears in my next post.

"Flusspferde" is such a great word for hippos! I wonder if they sound funny in every language. =)
